Over the last decade, the number of artists living in Los Angeles has increased significantly alongside the city's cost of living. However, there has not been an equal or significant increase in funding for individual artists.

bar-fund is an experimental public art project and artist run initiative whose mission is to create and find more financial opportunities for LA-based artists outside of the commercial gallery and private grant systems. One part of the initiative is to create a local artist grant through the accumulation of tips at the bars of Los Angeles art openings. All bartenders are artists and make up the grant's panel.

bar-fund is a horizontal grant building initiative that involves the local community, and is offered as an alternative to the top-down approach of most artist grant infrastructures. The initiative seeks to reroute existing power dynamics in the art world and continue a dialog, publicly, about self sustainability for artists.

Any artist can participate. To get involved or for questions, email
